Sow's Ear Mascara (Scary)
11"  Tan & White    Broken
Fox Run Fergus -- Lost Acres Revlon
NHC to Groundhog

"Good things come in small packages", as the saying goes.  And they don't get much smaller than Mascara, or "Scary", as she's affectionately been nicknamed.  It is hard to believe that she has turned four years old, she just barely makes 11 inches, yet is put together just beautifully.  She has no chest, and is as narrow as they come.  She has Revlon's long elegant neck and a top line to die for.  Her harsh broken coat is a pleasure to groom.  It is not hard to guess that this little bitch owns my heart.

So far, her diminutive size hasn't seemed to hinder her at all; she's done extremely well in the conformation ring from the get-go in the 4-6 Month classes, including Reserve 4-6 at Mason-Dixon.  And she has done equally as well in regular puppy classes with 2 Reserve Best Bitch Pup wins, and at the 2001 Nationals  placed 2nd in a really tough class of 32 entries, the biggest puppy class of the day! As an adult, she has continued her winning ways including placing 3rd at the 2002 Nationals in a highly competitive working class of 21 entries – again, the biggest working class of the day!

2003 has proven to be another banner year for Mascara.  She was bred to Sow’s Ear Julien (Bear) on Ground Hog Day, February, 2003 resulting in a litter of six (of which, two are already making their presence known in the conformation ring).  Within six weeks of whelping, she was back in the conformation ring - winning!  With many Bests in 2003, she finished the year with a Reserve Best Working Terrier at Free State (see picture below) and placed 2nd at the 2003 Nationals.  Again, one of the largest working classes

Kicking off 2004 as Reserve Best Working Terrier at Fox Cry, she continued her winning ways - even taking time off to whelp out puppies -  finishing the year as Best Working Bitch at Northgate.  (Mascara was unable to attend 2004 Nationals due to “seasonals.”)

Making her first 2005 appearance at Fox Cry, Mascara had back to back Reserve Best Working Bitch.

However, it's in the field where her size, or rather, lack of it, is best appreciated.   Scary turned on very early, and what she lacks in size she makes up for in attitude.  Getting up to the quarry is not a problem for her, and she earned her natural hunting certificate to groundhog at 7 months!  She's an extremely good worker, very clever, with enough grit to actually try and draw the quarry if she can.   She has an excellent nose and, although not "hard", demonstrates an unbelievable intensity. Over the past years, while hunting with various working judges, it has been more than flattering to hear them comment on "Scary’s" fantastic ability and determination.

We were planning to either repeat the breeding to "Sow’s Ear Julien (Bear)" or breeding Mascara to “Sow’s Ear Taltos (Harry)” in early 2004.  It was decided to use “Harry” and a litter of four was whelped in May.  (See photos.)  Two of these puppies have already been introduced to the show ring – with placements in two of the largest classes at 2004 Nationals – and, have always “been in the ribbons” - including their first 2005 trials.

Currently, and although both previous breeding were successful,  Mascara was bred to back to Sow's Ear Julien (Bear).  A  litter of five was whelped on July 15th.  Three girls and two boys. (See photo and pedigree below.)  One little male is so tiny that it is not known if he will survive or not but, he is still hanging in.

Scary is co-owned by Karen McCarthy of Sow's Ear Farm in Galway, New York.
